What responsible gambling means

A responsible player approaches gambling consciously and keeps the game under control. The idea is to hold the damage from excessive play to a minimum and not to let addiction take root.

The operator contributes through what §§ 13 to 16 of Act No. 186/2016 Coll. require of it: every operator, TRELANGEN a.s. included, must make tools and information for safe play available to players, namely financial and time limits, guidance on risks and on self-exclusion, and measures shielding minors. Tools only work, though, when the player uses them, which is why it pays to watch your own behaviour and not to overlook warning signs.

Warning signs

Problem gambling mostly develops by stealth. Typical signs include gambling harming your mental or physical health, trying to make up for losses with more play, and carrying on even though you already have debts or disputes. You should also be alerted by restlessness, irritability or anxiety at times when you cannot play, by gambling more and more often or for higher stakes, by loans taken out for gambling and by exceeding a spending limit you set yourself. Watch out, too, if you hide gambling from family and friends or neglect work, school or household duties because of it.

If you recognise any of this in yourself or someone close to you, do not wait; act now and use the prevention tools or professional help.

Limits and time-out

Betor gives every registered player responsible gambling tools right in the user account, as Act No. 186/2016 Coll. requires. The deposit limit decides how much money you can send to the gaming account per day, week or month; once it is used up, you have to wait until the period ends. The bet and loss limit keeps track of how much you stake or lose over a period you choose, and when it is reached the system halts play. The time limit restricts play per day or week and is accompanied by a reality check, a notice that pops up at regular intervals showing the time spent playing. And if you need to step away from the game completely, choose a time-out of 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days: until it ends you will not log in or play, after which the account is active again.

You set, lower and cancel limits yourself. Raising a limit, however, takes effect only after a protection period lasting at least 24 hours.

Panic button

Since 1 July 2024, operators of online gambling and gaming halls have been obliged to offer a panic button; the duty is laid down in § 16bb of Act No. 186/2016 Coll. The button sits in the user interface, and all registered players may use it.

Whoever activates it is immediately and temporarily excluded from all gambling for 48 hours. The exclusion automatically extends to every online platform of the operator, and at the same moment the player is offered the chance to request entry in the Register of Excluded Persons (RVO).

Self-exclusion

Under § 16 and § 16b of Act No. 186/2016 Coll., every player has the right to be excluded from gambling, either temporarily or permanently. The request can be made in the user account or through the gambling operator. An entry in the Register of Excluded Persons (RVO) then holds with all operators in the Czech Republic, and deletion from it may be sought only once 1 year has passed since the entry.

The Register of Excluded Persons

The register is kept by the Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic under Act No. 186/2016 Coll. It lists people who requested exclusion themselves as well as those whom the law itself excludes, for example persons subject to enforcement, in insolvency proceedings or drawing certain benefits. Anyone on the register may not take part in gambling with any licensed operator in the country.

You can apply for entry in your user account with the operator, by activating the panic button and then confirming the request, by data box to the Ministry of Finance, or in person via Czech POINT.

Minors

In the Czech Republic only people aged 18 and over may gamble, as Act No. 186/2016 Coll. lays down, and participation by minors is strictly prohibited. The operator therefore has to know who is playing with it: it verifies the age and identity of every player, for example through BankID or another verification tool, both at registration and when winnings are withdrawn.

Indicative test

The seven questions below come from the PGSI index (Problem Gambling Severity Index). Answer each honestly with yes or no.

  1. Has it happened that you spent more on gambling than you had planned?
  2. Does it occur to you that you ought to play less?
  3. Do you keep playing to get back what you lost?
  4. Have you ever borrowed money for gambling?
  5. Has someone around you pointed out that you have a problem with gambling?
  6. Do you feel guilty about gambling?
  7. Do your commitments or relationships with loved ones suffer because of gambling?

Several yes answers are a signal that it is time to reach for the prevention tools or get in touch with specialists. The test is only indicative and does not replace a professional diagnosis.

Where to find help

If gambling is getting on top of you, you can turn to specialists in confidence. Národní linka pro odvykání (National Quitline) takes calls on 800 350 000 free of charge and without your having to give your name. Společnost Podané ruce can be found at podaneruce.cz, and you can learn more about Klinika adiktologie 1. LF UK a VFN v Praze (Clinic of Addictology) at adiktologie.cz.
